Ouroboros – (excerpt from the script for my IPP film)

INT. AMBROSIA SKYE’S APARTMENT – 420 – DAY

There’s an establishing shot of the apartment building and then another establishing shot of Miss Ambrosia Skye’s apartment door.  It has the words: MISS AMBROSIA SKYE – TAROT READINGS – PALMISTRY – ASTROLOGY

The interior of the apartment is decked out in New Age décor.  She has numerous books on Tarot, spiritual healing, angels, the afterlife and communicating with departed souls; to name a few.  She is sitting in her kitchen table with a spread of Tarot cards.  MR. EVERETT and MRS. EVERETT are sitting opposite of her.  Mrs. Everett is really engaged and interested in the reading, but it’s obvious that Mr. Everett is only there because Mrs. Everett is.

Miss Ambrosia Skye draws a card from the deck and puts it down on the table.

                                                                                                            MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Hmm.

                                                                                                                              MRS. EVERETT

What?

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

I just drew the Tower card.

                                                                                                                                MRS. EVERETT

Is that a bad thing?

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Well, the Tower card is very similar to the Death Card –

Mrs. Everett GASPS.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

–In that it’s a card of destructive and creative power.  Just like a building that is condemned and must be torn down to make way for something new, so too is the purpose of the Tower card.  Is there something old, something that you’re holding onto that you need to let go of before you can move on?

                                                                                                                                MRS. EVERETT

That’s funny, isn’t it, David!  The kitchen.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

                                (Trying to hide her surprise)
Your kitchen?

                                                                                                                                MRS. EVERETT

Yes.  I’ve wanted to knock out the kitchen wall for years and make it open to the living room so that it’s more of an open concept thing.  David always thought it was too expensive, but if the cards are telling you . . .

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

The cards speak of change, and renewal.  It’s a fair bet that once you deal with the obstacle represented by the Tower card that emotional and financial wellbeing will flood back into your home.

                                                                                                                                MRS. EVERETT

See, David?  I told you it was the kitchen.  Didn’t I tell you?

Mr. Everett just rolls his eyes.

INT. AMBROSIA SKYE’S APARTMENT – 420 – DAY

The tarot reading has finished and Mr. and Mrs Everett have both left.  Miss Ambrosia Skye is making her and her friend CASIE JAMES a cup of tea.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

Well, that was fast.  You even have a sign over your door.  Have you gotten a lot of customers?

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

You wouldn’t believe how many.
                                (Laughs)
I put the sign up, paid for a few ads in the paper and WHAM.
                                (Claps her hands together)
I’ve already had fourteen people just this last week.  I’ve made almost fourteen hundred dollars, tax-free.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

You charge a hundred dollars a visit?

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

I tell them that because I’m opening my house to them there’s an extra fee to come here to my home.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

And they pay it?

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

So far.

                                                                                CASIE JAMES

I just don’t understand how you can keep promoting a farce, when you don’t believe and know it’s a farce.  Other people trust you with major decisions in their lives, and you’re misleading them.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Casie, I don’t tell them anything they don’t already know or haven’t already thought of.  This is more of a psychological exercise.  I give vague open ended readings and they insert their own desired outcomes.  It’s exactly what they wanted to hear, they just wanted someone else to tell them.  To validate them.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

I still think it’s wrong.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Fourteen hundred dollars in a week can’t be wrong?  That’s the kind of money I’d make in a month working at our old job.
                                (Beat)
I don’t understand how you can still work there.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

Well, it’s honest work.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Serving uptight assholes coffee isn’t honest work.  It’s soul crushing, mind numbing labor that further promotes the ideology of stuffy, elitism.  If I had to spend another second hearing assholes complaining about how their foam isn’t stiff enough, or their extra-hot latte is too extra-hot . . .
                                (Exhales, frustrated.)
I’m helping these people.  They come to me and I give them a sense of contentment with the decisions they’ve already made.  My services are therapeutic.

                                                                                                                                CASIE JAMES

I don’t know.

                                                                                                                                MISS AMBROSIA SKYE

Well, agree to disagree.  What do you take in your tea?
